There are different types of knives- each one made to serve a specific function. In most homes, only two or three types of knives are used on a regular basis. In total, there are up to 10 categories of knives and some types have slowly become redundant and forgotten. Boning Fillet Knife
The boning fillet knife is a type of knife that performs both the functions of a boning knife and a fillet knife. A boning knife is typically 4 to 8 inches in length with stiff or semi flexi blades. It is usually used to separate meat from bone and for cutting meat that is not too thick. The fillet knife is also a small knife like the boning knife. It is used to cut thin fish slices since it is thinner and longer.
Table/Steak Knife
The table knife, also called steak knife is a type of knife that is used for already cooked food in the dining room. It is a bit bigger that the boning fillet knife but not as big is the chef's knife. Table knives may be serrated or not – serrated knives are generally known to remain sharp for a long time, compared to non serrated knives.
Santoku Knife
The Santoku knife is actually a Japanese version of the chef's knife. It is used for three functions- mincing, dicing and slicing. Compared to the chef's knife, the Santoku knife is a bit lighter to carry. Also, it is shorter and has a flat blade. The blade usually has dimples that avoid meat, fish or vegetables from sticking to the knife while slicing.
Bread Knife
This is one of the commonly known type of knives- even people that don’t know about the different types of knives have a bread knife. Similar to the steak knife, the bread knife is majorly used on the dining table. They are serrated to make it easier to slice bread or cakes without pressing or squishing it. Aside cutting bread, it can also be used to cut large or thick chunks or food due to its long and narrow blade. The bread knife can be about 7 to 9 inches long and the blade usually has no dimple or belly- it is usually perfectly straight.
Chef's Knife
Being the ‘king of the kitchen', this list would be incomplete without the chef's knife. The chef's knife is the most essential in your kitchen. The length ranges from 6 to 12 inches, making it one of the biggest knives used in the kitchen. It has a long blade that curves upwards, making it possible to rock back and forth. It can be used for almost every function in the kitchen. The chef's knife is also occasionally called the cook's knife.
